Ensuring Compliance with the German Ink Ordinance (GIO)

From January 1, 2026, the German Ink Ordinance (GIO) will introduce stricter rules for printing inks used in food contact materials. This means that only approved substances can be used and/or migration limits must be met to ensure consumer safety.

At Resino, we are prepared for these new requirements and are committed to helping our customers comply. If you’d like to learn more, we invite you to visit our stand at IFFA, where we’ll be happy to discuss compliance with GIO standards.

How Resino Ensures Compliance

Before the end of 2025 our inks will be thoroughly tested to ensure they meet migration limits and regulatory requirements. To support our customers, we provide comprehensive documentation, including:

A Declaration of Compliance (DoC), confirming they comply with GIO.

Information on non-listed substances (NLS) and non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), along with risk assessments based on EU safety standards.

Migration test result examples, proving that non-listed substances remain below the SML value or 10 ppb detection limit tested according to EU Plastics Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011.

A Regulatory Compliance Statement, ensuring our inks do not contain harmful substances like mutagens, carcinogens, or reprotoxic (CMR) chemicals, as defined by the CLP Regulation.

In regulatory compliance, we follow internationally recognized risk assessment principles, ensuring the highest safety standards for our inks.

What This Means for You

If you are a packaging manufacturer, converter, or food brand, you are responsible for ensuring that final printed packaging meets compliance requirements. This includes checking that the packaging structure, thickness, and food type do not cause migration levels to exceed the limits.

Keeping proper documentation is also essential. Customers must ensure they have a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) for inks used and confirming  they meet GIO standards. Additionally, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) must be followed to avoid contamination during production.

Our Commitment

At Resino, we are dedicated to ensuring our inks fully comply with GIO and other EU food contact material regulations, however, compliance is a shared responsibility. By working together and maintaining clear documentation, we can help ensure both regulatory approval and food safety.
